Oct. 10th, 2008 08:55 pmToday has been made of fail in so many ways:
First place has to go to locking myself out of an open door.
The key would not turn in the door so I was ringing the bell and phoning housemates and asking next door whether I could try to scramble over their fence... no luck. As I was chatting to the girl next door, I explained how
ayaron had once broken into his own house, and in explaining this, I turned the door handle; and the door popped open. It had been left on the latch, hence the key not turning. Fail.
Second place, I think, goes to being immensely rude to creepy-boy.
Having had myself and
robot_mel answer a query about writing .html files in notepad, and my having said "why not ask the group discussion boards if you still don't get it?", he insisted today that he still did not get it. And that couldn't I just "be a pal" and spend lunchtime trapped in a computer room with him? I asked him, again, what the problem was; he said, "I can't find my .txt files". Having had both myself and
robot_mel explain how a .html file could be reopened in notepad by choosing "right click - open with", I said "it's just a text file. I'm sure you can type another one" and stalked off. So now all the full-timers / second-year part-timers think I'm a heinous bitch; and it hasn't even stopped creepy!boy. This afternoon I had *snuck out of the lecture slightly early to avoid him*, and kept my eyes seriously peeled so I could walk away if I saw him coming. Somehow, despite my vigilance, he managed to appear out of nowhere, *two inches behind my left ear* and start talking to me. Argh. The really really irritating thing about all of this is that he still hasn't done anything concretely wrong. He's just freaking me out. There's nothing that I can tell him to stop doing, or make an official complaint about. But I spent most of today hiding from him, nonetheless.
Honourable mentions need to go to not having returned a bunch of really important emails, not having time to tidy up my room even though the clutter is getting me down, and whatever it is that is making me want to sleep fourteen hours a day.
Ah well, at least the Eighth Doctor exists. And someone wrote Eighth/Turing fic over on
henriettastreet. (Warning: contains the Eighth Doctor immersing himself in complex computational problems. This is an unfair conflation of several of my kinks!) And when I mentioned to my lecturer that his flippant comment about "the intractability of incompleteness theory can be seen from how Godel and Turing both met tragic ends" was a bit fucking misleading as far as Turing was concerned, actually - he drew attention to this in the next lecture.

Date: 2008-10-10 08:32 pm (UTC)I seriously doubt that the other students think you're a heinous bitch. And even if they got the wrong impression from eavesdropping on your conversation with this guy, they'll get it corrected soon enough when they all find out what he's like and realise that you were in the right!
I know you know this, but again: You are not his tutor (or, for that matter, his 'pal', unless you want to be) and you are under no obligation to explain the course material to him. You are ALLOWED to be freaked out, and allowed to keep avoiding him for as long as it takes to get the message, or to take whatever other action you need to take to make sure he gets said message.
Plus, *argh* on the lock, and yay for fighting the good fight against historical misinformation re: Alan Turing! One day I will get that blog set up... *cackles sleep-deprivedly*

Too true. I also second the taking action to get the necessary message across.

Date: 2008-10-10 08:46 pm (UTC)My epic fail of the day has consisted, less interestingly, of spending most of the day on the internet and so failing to learn 4 chapters of probability. But hey, the polls are like trees in a forest. If I'm not looking at them, maybe they won't count.

Date: 2008-10-10 08:50 pm (UTC)Well, a paragraph of explanation in a lecture about research methods in technology, so I haven't really learnt anything about it that I'd not picked up from hanging around with mathmos.. still, interesting & cool!

Date: 2008-10-11 11:18 am (UTC)There, that's the limit of my understanding of incompleteness theorem.
Also "I explained how ayaron had once broken into his own house"; not really information I would want being spread!
:O)

While he is technically doing nothing wrong at the moment, he has two choices at that point. Leave you alone (win) or contact you against your clearly expressed wishes and thus giving you the nessisary evidence to make an official complaint (win)
If he is freaking you out, you have every right to avoid him/not want to talk to him AND TO TELL HIM SO.
