Aha, this is excellent! And surprisingly hard.. (shows how far I have to go in my quest to be a really accessible copy writer.)

Can you explain what you do using only the most common 1,000 words in the English language?

Work:

I work for a place where people go if they want to keep on studying after they finish school. It is very well known but lots of people think that they can't go there even though they can. They think that it takes a lot of money or that you have to be from one type of family. These things are not true (well, it does take a lot of money, but we will give you a lot of money too if you need it). It is my job to help people understand that these things don't matter - if they have done well at school, they can come and study here. (It is also my job to make sure that everyone picks us over the other place.)

Lashings:

I am part of a group that writes and puts on shows that try to change how people think about the world. We want the world to be different - for people to be kinder to each other, and think about how what they do might hurt other people. We think it is important that people should be allowed to be different from each other, but there are lots of people in the world today who don't think this is true. We try to help more people see it our way with songs and dances and plays.

Then I tried to describe vkbar's work:

I look at numbers that mean many things to different people, like to some people they mean how the very very very smallest things work and to other people they are how not real numbers sit on a line. Then I tell these things to young people and they don't care even a little bit.

Arg, that's a lot harder than it looks!

My job:

I work with people who are not well and try to make them feel better. I do this by helping them with food, with waking up in the morning, with letting them be as happy or sad as they need to. Sometimes when they feel very sad I try to make them feel happier by listening to them.

My faith blogging project:

I like thinking about the world - things I can see and feel, and things that I can't explain. I am writing for a year about all my thoughts about this so I can help myself feel better and so I can learn more about the things that I can't explain.

I help my mother do her job of listening to people and helping them listen to each other, by doing the parts that she finds hard. I tell people they need to pay her money, and check if they paid yet, and make her computer work better. I also write down the things she needs to remember, and keep them in the right place, and put her room and boxes of papers in order for her.

This was hard without using the word 'gay'.

My job: I work with young people who are having a hard time because of who they fall in love with. Sometimes men love men, or women love women. But sometimes other people can't accept this. Sometimes people get kicked out of home because of who they love. Sometimes they might get hurt, or people might say bad things about them. When this happens, they might need some help to deal with their problems. Or they might just need someone to talk to. My job is to help them.

This was easier than I expected, actually. Possibly that's just because my job's fairly easy to explain. Also, I had hints from reading other folks'.

I tell computers what their job is, and how to do their job.

The computers I work with are needed to make phone calls. They make sure that when you want to call someone, you call the right person, and that you can hear the person you call, and that they can hear you.

Sometimes I tell the computers how to do new things, like how to talk to new types of phone, or to ring a lot of phones at once when you call one of them. Other times the computers break, and I need to fix them.

This was really useful (and difficult!) particularly as social work is so full of jargon and is supposed to be empowering and about sharing information.

My job- I work with people. Sometimes the people I work with hear voices that no one else can hear. Sometimes they have ideas that are not understood by other people. Sometimes they are more sad or more excited or more angry than other people. Sometimes these things are hard to deal with and they hurt themselves. I try to help them when things are hard. I stand up for them when they are not listened to.

At the moment I work in a hospital. There are lots of old people there who have been in hospitals most of their lives. This is because in the past it was thought that people who heard voices or had strange ideas or strong moods could not live with everyone else. I am finding new homes for these people so that they won't have to spend their whole lives in hospital. I find them places where they will be looked after but will also be more free and able to live with everyone else.
