BECAUSE BLAKE IS AN HONEST MAN AND TOTALLY DOESN'T THINK HE'S MANIPULATING AVON EXCEPT FOR HOW HE TOTALLY DOES BUT THINKS IT'S JUSTIFIED ANYWAY BUT AT THE SAME TIME TOTALLY DOESN'T. OMG.

This is exactly right. Added that every so often, particularly in the first series but also in the second, there are strong suggestions that Blake is in no mental state to be leading anybody, capacity for self-deception aside. Voice from the Past is at the forefront of my mind at the moment.
