Avon to Blake, in "Space Fall", the first episode where we meet Avon: "Don't try to manipulate me, Blake".

Blake to Avon, in "Space Fall", the first episode where we meet Avon: "I'm offering you the chance of freedom".

Oh hai, crushing inevitability </3

OMG YES THEY ARE SO PERFECT. BECAUSE BLAKE IS AN HONEST MAN AND TOTALLY DOESN'T THINK HE'S MANIPULATING AVON EXCEPT FOR HOW HE TOTALLY DOES BUT THINKS IT'S JUSTIFIED ANYWAY BUT AT THE SAME TIME TOTALLY DOESN'T. OMG.

See, now you discover that *every single line* between them has this AMAZING HUGE SIGNIFICANCE because they keep talking about freedom and trust and manipulation and OMG THE END. And now you won't be able to watch random episodes in company with people who haven't seen it before because THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS RANDOM CONVERSATION IS AMAZING. HA. WELCOME TO MY WORLD.

This is exactly right. Added that every so often, particularly in the first series but also in the second, there are strong suggestions that Blake is in no mental state to be leading anybody, capacity for self-deception aside. Voice from the Past is at the forefront of my mind at the moment.

It's a nice piece of foreshadowing, because Avon has a need to be manipulated. Anna did it. Blake does it. Cally does it very occasionally. Tarrant attempts to do it. Orac occasionally manages it - and so does Servalan. For all I know, his brother did it too. As [livejournal.com profile] inamac put it, "He has all these dangling strings that just ache to be pulled."

When there isn't someone there to manipulate him (and keep him human) Avon generally messes up big time. It is why, for my money, he keeps looking for Blake - he knows there is a big something missing in his life - emotional direction.
