Things done:

Tuesday:
Had to accept that the 80s caused something like a century's worth of regression in gender politics in Blake's 7.

Thursday:
Fell for Troughton's Doctor through watching Tomb of the Cybermen. Also fell for the delightfully orchestrated "Cyberman Theme" - that's what New Who is lacking, in my opinion: bassoons.

Friday:

Ate pasta salad. Saw Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. (Guildenstern inhumanly pretty, like a pre-raphaelite painting of a "goddess" which is so clearly, really, a teenage boy.) Saw Borderville. (Who are, incidentally, back on form. I have resigned myself to the fact that their old stuff is gone, never to be played again; but they sent me a live recording of their old stuff, so that the feeling of loving them in 2006 can be mine forever! The new stuff is growing on me, although it's still a bit too three-minute rock-song for my taste. This time I could hear the lyrics, and realised that there is referentiality back to the old stuff, like people "still terrified of being alone". Squee!) Sat in Christ Church eating ice-cream until 1am with [livejournal.com profile] crouchinglynx, [livejournal.com profile] deathbyshinies, and [livejournal.com profile] deepbluemermaid, feeling euphoric like I haven't in a very long time.

Things learnt:

When people give you strange looks in a library, it is often for a good reason. When you're out shelving, listening to Doctor Who audio dramas, it is important to realise that Dalek voices are about five volume-points louder than the rest of the action, and adjust your mp3 player accordingly; otherwise, everyone who walks past you can hear the Dalek voices coming out of your headphones. My Geek Shame, hoyes.

You say that, but most of the PPEists I know (apart from [livejournal.com profile] loneraven and [livejournal.com profile] kuteki, that is) are really depressingly normal. :(

Your geek shame is beautiful. It makes me want to get the train to Oxford right now just to meet you.

May I assume that you're aware of the genius casting in tonight's DW?

If you can call it genius when it results in someone who *can't really act* trying to play a role that should have been a lot more emotionally affecting.. then yeah, I'm aware that she's Davison's daughter. Ah who am I kidding, I loved the episode anyway! What did you think of it?

It also resulted in a few 'ick' moments when you realised that the Doctor and his daughter were looking at each other in slightly the wrong way...still, can't blame either of the actors. Generally I thought the episode, like much of this series, was a bit long on preachy and a bit short on reasonable plot. I thought Jenny was actually quite a good character, clearly the same slightly deranged offset between seriousness and mischief as the Doctor, but with different triggers. I am also glad that the Doctor didn't feel "so sorry" for himself for too long.

Woe, I missed R&G! Guildenstern is an English fresher at my college, and I think an Old Etonian, but one who got chucked out. Something like that, anyway.

Hiya - I see you've got Intrusion on your feed. Do you think you'll go tomorrow? I've been thinking about going (though I'm not a proper goth!)...

I haven't been for a little while (the atrocity that was the Valentine's Intrusion being burnt onto the inside of my skull) but, frankly, I miss the pretty music and the pretty people, and have caved in and made arrangements to go this month.

I certainly wouldn't worry about not being a proper goth - many of my friends who come to Intrusion are essentially "goth tourists" who like playing dress-up once a month.

There is currently talk of meeting in a pub from 8ish for a beverage or two before moving on to the Cellar; I'll be sure to include you in the filter when we're finalising those details.

Eep, what was the specific atrocity of the V-day Intrusion? (if you don't mind me asking... if it's too traumatic to talk about, I understand!)

Splendid on the other stuff, as I think I'd be going solo (unless I can convince [livejournal.com profile] meadb to join) and it would be nice to drink up beforehand.

"Tart numbers" and shortest-skirt competitions and a "dirty dancing" competition that I was entered in against my will & without my knowledge simply because I'd felt like dancing to "Closer". Friends who were as pissed off as me with it said it was more misogynistic, more compulsary, and more offensive than similar events at mainstream nightclubs. There was quite a lot of righteous anger (and wank in the [livejournal.com profile] oxgoths community!).
