One of the things I'm doing as part of my traineeship is the ECDL - European Computer Driving Licence. It's an essentially pointless lot of button-clicking that'll fail you if you use [tab] to move between fields in one excercise, then fail you if you don't in another; that'll fail you for using [ctrl+c] to copy; and so on. But once you've re-learnt your basic use of word, internet explorer (boy was that a blast from the past) and how to save to floppy disks (seriously! does the question "how much memory does a zip disk have" really affect my ability to function in a computer-related environment?) it's really quite a piece of piss.

So here's me.

consistently getting ~95% on tests for the first time since pre-GCSE.

and my god does it feel good. i get that this whole qualification is a great big fucking joke - and i don't care! these marks feel good! finishing tests ages before the rest of the group and still having the highest mark feels good!

why hello there 14-yr-old self. you're an arrogant complacent little shit, aren't you?

yes, i'm aware that you had every right to be, but still. your re-emergence now, while pleasant, is probably not that great for my mental functioning as a whole. still. *glows with pride at pointless acheivements*

Oooh I remember having to do that at school and the teacher being slightly suprised at how easy a couple of us seemed to find it. Have you done the multiple choice one on parts of a computer yet? I seem to remember there being questions such as:
Where would one normally play computer games? a) at home, b) at school, c) in the library

For some reason on that test the pass mark was a very low 65%. I do remember wondering at the time what the point of the whole thing was. The only bit I had to retake was the Outlook test and I only missed the passmark by 2 marks and since we didn't actually have outlook on school computers and I guessed most of it I wasn't too upset.

Heh. This really made me smile. I remember it so well.
I haven't seen you for frakking ages. Shall we do coffee next time I'm in Oxford, at your convenience?
xx

I have to do something like that or I can't graduate. Despite the fact that I've done, y'know, actual programming jobs and everything. I've been putting it off for three years so far.

Tests... where... 80% isn't amazingly wonderfully worthy of going out to get drunk in celebration... really?

I got a score in the 99.96th percentile on one of the tests I had to take as part of my dyslexia reassesment. It made me happy.

Apropos of nothing in your post (although your 14-year-old self reminds me of myself rather strongly) - I remember you talking at one point about cocktails and happy hour at the Duke of Cambridge on Friday. Was that planned for this week, or was it just a vague thought?

Yes, it was planned for this Friday.. until I took into account the whole "girlfriend's birthday" thing. Then next week there's the whole "pantomime" thing. I completely fail at seeing people, and still want cocktails, dammit!

Ah well; prioritising your girlfriend's birthday was probably the right move...
Hopefully we'll get to do cocktails at some point!

Is that offer of lunch at the SSL still open? I have to visit my library during daylight hours, for once, probably on Tuesday. Would that suit you - if so, what time?

Sounds marvellous! Tuesday I am working the desk 12.30-1.30, so imagine I'll be taking lunch 1.30-2.30.

Excellent. I will come find you at the desk around 1.30.

Heh, thanks - I love it too. I hadn't even realised that the dinosaur pictures were from a webcomic when I snagged it; apparently it's funnier if you read the comic.

I have a real weakness for crossover icons; I may possibly have wept tears of laughter when I first saw the LOTR / Bill & Ted's icons.
