Mooncup!

I know I'm coming to this later than a lot of my lady-flist, what with the not bleeding for a year & all, but seriously - if you've managed to miss this for even longer than I did, go and buy one. Now. You can get them in the Boots on Cornmarket Street, but they're actually marginally cheaper by mail-order anyway.

I am normally super-paranoid about leaks & things, to the extent of tampon+pad on heavy days, but, on only my second day wearing the mooncup, I was happy to leave the house for a day out at the zoo without carrying any spare protection. It is magic I tell you! Wearing it feels completely safe and not at all dirty. Kinda liberating. Do you know what? It also makes me very much into an earth mother hippy type - never before have I been one to feel things like "ooh, my vagina is kinda amazing" but, y'know, magic muscles! And no more putting tampons in the sea, ever, so I feel very hippyish/virtuous on that front, too. Yay. And that's all most of you will ever need to know about my vagina.

I use softcups because they let me have clean, penetrative sex while bleeding. FYI. :)

a question. with added tmi!

I've heard a lot of excited babbling about mooncups from friends online and off, and really wish I could use one - eco-friendliness! Not supporting the companies that shamelessly overcharge us for sanitary products because they know they have a captive market! Etc. But. I have Problems with my vagina: basically, it doesn't like stuff going inside it, to the extent that I have to use towels rather than tampons because the latter are so painful to insert. The diagrams on that website seem to indicate that when you put the Mooncup in, it is in a small and squished form. Is it as big and intrusive as a tampon to get in and out? Would really appreciate an opinion, as I definitely like the mooncup in theory, but have always been put off in practice because my vagina definitely prefers its own company.

...aaaand that's all your flist ever wanted to know about my vagina.

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONCUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love love love my Mooncup. Best thing I ever bought. I love it. I love love love it. Gah!!

I was paranoid about leakage on the first cycle, so I was checking it as often as I used to change a pad. But now...yeah, I can go out for an entire day!!!

When I went to see Muse at Wembley, I put it in in the morning and changed it once before I went to the gig and then...wow, it was so amazing!

I love my Mooncup!!! I have made several entries about it.

Also, are you on the mooncup/divacup community?!

!!!!

Sorry, I am all wanting to help other people with their mooncups!

[livejournal.com profile] menstrual_cups! This should have lots of helpfulness about mooncups and diva cups and all the others. I really hope that you are able to use one properly.

There is also a link about all the different folds that can be used for inserting/extraction, so it should help you out.

Gosh, I love my Mooncup so much!

My vagina won't take tampons (doesn't like how dry they are mostly) but will take a mooncup. I'd say they are a little wider, but easier than a tampon going in, but harder than a tampon coming out.

mostly, what-they-said about it.. I find that it is bigger than a tampon, but easier to insert. I can't quite explain it but it just feels more friendly somehow. Smoother, less full of fibres & bleach. I think the community [livejournal.com profile] forgiveninasong linked you to has an entry about all the different folds you can use; basically, you can fold it up to be very small indeed, but the smaller you fold it the more difficult it is to get it to pop back into shape when in place.

But, as with everyone's advice, YMMV. It might be a wasted £20 experiment if you have a real size issue or muscular problem that does make it impossible to insert. I'd say it's a worthwhile experiment, though; have a prod around that community & see if people with similar problems have stories to share?

I have this issue - I've just about coped with a mooncup, but I prefer cloth menstrual pads: Luna Pads (http://www.lunapads.com/) and Punky's Pads (http://stores.ebay.com/Punkys-Pads) are some that I know are very popular in the online communities ([Unknown site tag] for instance).

Personally, the ones I have actually tried myself are the Wemoon pads that I bought from here (http://www.plushpants.com/details/Natural%20Woman/subcat/Wemoon(R)%20Menstrual%20Pads/extra_cat/Menstrual%20Products.html) and some delightfully named Fairy Hammocks! (http://www.weenotions.wahmall.co.uk/traderplus/index.php?formaction=catdisplay&categoryID=2660)

You can also find patterns online to make your own, if you're a sewing type. [Unknown site tag] is great help with this.

A lot of people worry about them being "gross" to wash, but honestly I don't think they are. Although, I work as a nursing assistant so my threshold for gross is quite a lot higher than most people! But they are certainly something to consider if you want to be eco-friendly but don't want to go internal!

Argh. Was guessing the community tag and it didn't work. They are called cloth_pads and diy_pads, just search for them if you're interested!

Welcome to the cult! :) I don't know if I've pointed you to this before, but my FAQ (http://www.andustar.com/misc-cups.html) does a pretty good job of explaining the basics. For when the nth person goes 'buh?' and you're tired of going through the same script again.

I also second the [livejournal.com profile] menstrual_cups recommendation if you have any questions/comments to make about it. I'm superactive there under my other nick, hehe.
