I didn't get the KEEN job. Didn't even get called to interview.

I'm oddly revlieved. I wanted the library job more anyway, and now there's no chance of ending up in a situation where I've been offered one job and have to decide whether to take a certain job I like less, or gamble on getting my Dream Job.

But there's just a little bit of me that wonders, "what was wrong with me?" Was I not the president of enough uni societies? Does advertising Stonewall allow easy homophobia in employers? Should I have work experience from soul-sucking corporations before anyone will take me seriously?

I mean, my lack of experience working with disabled kids is the logical answer. But my general deficiency as a human being is also implicated.

I can't do it today, and I can't promise at all, but I'll see what I can dig out for you in re: graduate traineeships, dates, shortlists &c. Do you get to pick a library? or does it happen by lot?
Dates in our diary read : March 12, Grad trainee shortlisting
March 19 Valerie trainee recruitment, panel to meet at EF:
March 26/7 Grad trainee interviews

I've applied to the trainee scheme itself, and have no idea at what stage in the application process I would get assigned to a library.

All I know is that, if I haven't heard by March 23rd, I haven't got an interview. Still, it's good to know that they aren't even shortlisting until late march, so that I don't angst about not having heard form them before then... thanks!

No worries. Even though I'm thinking of leaving here, it's not definite yet, and I think you would be awesome in this library, and fit right in, for my two pen'orth, anyway!

Ah, the ability of job-hunting to erode the soul truly is quite amazing...

*hugs*

Just doesn't work out sometimes, babe, doesn't mean that you're anything less than a big shiny star!

* nother hug *

Re: Stonewall - if it hurts your application then it means that whoever is processing it is an arse and you quite clearly don't want to work for whomever chooses to employ them.
I'd think the good things about having had experience like that on a CV far outweighs any badness.

See you Thursday (?)

Neil.

Silly people don't know what they're missing out on!

But there's just a little bit of me that wonders, "what was wrong with me?"

My first guess would be that they probably had people competing for the position who'd been involved in KEEN as undergraduates, thus were a known quantity to the selection panel, had proven experience, etc. Which doesn't mean that you wouldn't have been amazing at it, or that there was anything wrong with your CV or application - just that hiring boards like known quantities and might be looking for any reason to cut their lists.

Am crossing all available crossable things for the library interview shortlist!

*hugs some more*

I... suspect they will have taken a student who was a regular KEEN volunteer, who they know and can vouch for. Unfair, but probably true.

Count it as storing up your good luck for later when you're really going to need it.

Loveyou.
xx

Hon, I employed people recently and I had 74 applications, from which I hired 6 people. Yes, some applications weren't very good, but over half were perfectly good applications from interesting and intelligent people - and this was for a just over mimimum wage ushers job.

It definately NOT due to any personal deficeincy, and definately not homophobia - that's completely illegal, and there are processes you have to go through with any hiring which make it very hard to get away with it.

It's probably lack of experience in the area and too many applicants for the job. I know it's rubbish, but it's really not personal.
