However, I wasn't especially impressed with the quote [Bad username or site: vampire kitten @ livejournal.com] mentioned from the head of the kindergarden though - it struck me as imposing a solution upon people rather than letting on emerge naturally. And I may be mistaken but I can't recall ever having been lined up by gender at school so what the hell is the 'line up by sneaker colour' thing?
I was always lined up at first school, into two lines by gender and then alphabetically (nightmare for dyslexics when a new term started!). After that was at single sex school so can't comment, but middle school v. keen on seperating genders (different sports played, different levels of education given, first choice of options, better equipment given to the boys etc.)
I like the implication that other ways of dividing up the kids are equally arbitrary and essentially meaningless, though. Though I was in a single sex school so can't comment on how prevalent gender separation is.
Emmaaa, could you do me a favour - pop into the JCR and see where I am on the room ballot? Because waiting til my next foray into town is MUCH TOO PAINFUL etc (apparently it was up last night, I didn't realise...). :)
At my junior schools we were always lined up by gender and then first initial, then segregated for sports classes. Girls below the last two years had to wear skirts, as well.
