Today I'm researching "incitement to homophobic hatred". It's rather more depressing than some of the othe stuff I've been doing, but everybody loves a bit of righteous anger.

Everybody also loves a bit of irony; and the BNP website quoting oscar wilde made me laugh lots this afternoon.

If you've seen any examples of incitement to homophobic hatred in the UK, I'd love for them to be forwarded or sent to me. (Ask for my postal address, and yes shall receive.)

If I can track down the letter to the Sunday Telegraph that the National Front wrote, where it says "the BNP aren't proper racists because they allow blacks and gays in their party", would you like that? I'm sure I Have it somewhere, it's so horrendous it's almost funny.

Love how they can't even understand the difference between black and gay...

We couldn't quite believe it when we read it - we initially thought it was a pisstake. Then the full horror dawned...

We are the real racialists:

With reference to the letter headed "Odious connection" from a member of the British National Party (Letters, April 3), let me inform your readers and its author that the National Front has no wish to be identified with the BNP. The NF is a Racial Nationalist party, which stands by its original policies of "Stop immigration, Start repatriation". The BNP, for imagined short term political gain, has reneged on its original policies. It now advocates that coloured immigrants be allowed to remain in Britain. It even allows coloured membership and has coloured candidates. It allows homosexual membership of the BNP and fawns on the "gay" vote. It has a Sikh columnist in its newspaper and a Sikh appeared on its television broadcast. These are hardly the policies of a bona fide Nationalist party. No wonder many genuine nationalists are being sacked by the BNP hierarchy and many more leaving for genuine White Nationalist parties. The BNP is no longer a genuine White Racial Nationalist party and the National Front entirely disassociates itself from it. Tom Holmes Chairman, The National Front Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

ooh, thank you! i probably can't use this as evidence of "incitement to hatred", but I can use it as a springboard into extensive googling to find the homophobic hate literature which undoubtedly underlies this somewhere...

*nods* It's strange how they seem to ally gayness with immigration and colour. Perhaps they think of it as a "foreign" perversion or something. Indeed, istr when we were doing Orientalism, there was a whole discourse about being able to do things in foreign countries you couldn't here, some sort of rather perverse sexual freedom, which obviously the writers covetted but couldn't do it "here", iyswim. Also foreign/non-white peoples were more "barbaric", and therefore more brutally sexual in a way for these writers; nasty, horrible stuff. I think the book we did for that was called Vathek.

It's especially interesting because after the Empire exported its anti-gay laws to its colonies (most of which had been perfectly relaxed about it before), said colonies frequently convinced themselves (http://www.infopt.demon.co.uk/suppress.htm) that queerness was a "white perversion". Everyone just loves passing the big gay buck.

*nods* It's like Syphilis - everyone calls it everyone else's disease - French pox to the English, the French called it Malade Anglaise, I believe it was called the Spanish Disease by someone or other...

Which part is an oscar wilde quote out of interest? I'm not familiar enough to spot his quotes without them having a big "Oscar Wilde said/wrote this" sign next to them...

OW described fox hunting as "the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable", and they quote that towards the end of the article.

Can I make a suggestion? Set up a fresh hotmail address to work from, and email them pointing this out, along with the irony. It might open up some avenues of research?

I love the way the call the Sun a 'rag' though... gods, I have a view in common with the BNP, I feel so dirty...

The Sun isn't a rag though. Rags are useful for all sorts of household jobs. I have yet to divine a practical purpose for that tabloid.

It's like the Oxstu one. It's fun because you can always finish it.

From: [identity profile] sushi-radical.livejournal.com
Have you ever done it? It's really not as easy as you'd expect, though I'm not too great at crosswords... It's harder than the guardian one, imho.

The Oxstu one? A few times at hall. I only read The Sun when it's left behind on the train, and by then the crossword's already been finished and copiously doodled over. The Daily Mail one's are quite easy too. I usually race my Gran on that when we visit.

The Ozstu usually hangs around G&D's or Thirst every Thurday or Friday, so they are always available to colour in if you're bored.
Monkey doesn't get crosswords, unless you sit with him and help him through it. He doesn't see why words should be made to fit into little boxes.

I also like Sudokos. They are a bit like Freecell only more satisfying because you can actually feel your brain stretching when you do one.

I don't think that's an offer they'd take up. I mean, would you accept toilet paper from someone who disliked you? Especially if it didn't look like toilet paper?

The guy who campaigned so vehemently against JSTOpera, Stephen Green, has a lot to say about homosexuals. Google him and his organisation, "Christian Voice". That's a bit of a misleading title because it is, in fact, just him in this organisation.
