Apr. 7th, 2006 08:09 pmIn a way, I'm glad that none of you trekked from far-away lands to see RENT... because, while it was enjoyable, had some great sequences, and made me cry, it mostly drove home two things:
1. Chris Columbus should not be let near things that I love. First Harry Potter, now this. YOU CANNOT DIRECT, please stop trying.
2. RENT is a stage musical. It works, with its sung-through libretto and its clever interweaving of many different scenes happening at once. (Mark/Mimi "Another Day" vs Life Support "No Day But Today", anyone?)Filming it with sets and locations actually detracts more than it adds.
Also, saw Narayani again for the first time in Far Too Long. It's so odd to think that she - one of the friends who matters the very most from pre-Oxford times - doesn't know any of the people or things that are making me so happy at the moment.

And I'm sorry it sounds like it probably wasn't worth the trek - I was a bit worried when I saw the trailer and realised they'd taken the libretto out. That was always my favourite part - I was sucked in from that little exchange in Scene One:
She's in love -
- She's got a new man?
Well, no -
- What's his name?
JOANNE!
Classic.
But on a more cheerful note, have you seen the New Script? There's broomstick shenanigans! *cackles*

Date: 2006-04-08 06:28 am (UTC)They kept a lot of the libretto - that fabulous sequence, for exmaple - but spoken rather than sung. which just makes it sounds like badly written, oddly rhythmical dialogue.
And, yes, the new script is of joy! The narrators bits make it flow so much better, and are, well, Prtachett narration! I only worry that it means even more lines to learn when I'm only as far as scene 8 as it is...

Bet you wish you'd never said anything, now...
