  1. beauty:
in unexpected places, especially. in people, in ideas, in moments, in myself.
  2. christina ricci:
is still my lj background and my mood theme, despite the obsession having waned rather a lot. she's pretty, unlike most girls i see in mainstream films.
  3. evanescence:
a band i used to love. a bad faux-goth lacuna coil rip-off? perhaps. but amy lee has one of the most amazing voices i've ever had the privilege to hear live (twice!), PLUS she plays piano, PLUS she wears corsets and big poofy skirts... a formative influence, shall we say?
  4. good omens:
the apocalypse! angel/demon slash! pratchett comedy within a gaiman worldview. on entirely escapist criteria, my favourite novel.
  5. j. k. huysmans:
fin de siecle french writer. was dull and borgueois and worked in an office... produced novels as varied as "La-Bas" - about satanists who cut open childrens' bellies and fuck their still-warm intestines - and insanely pious, semi-autobiographical stuff about his own religious conversion. "A Rebours" (Against Nature) is the yellow book which so influenced Dorian Gray in Wilde's "The Picture of...", in fact, Wilde lifted whole chapters of the book from Huysmans in style and in content. It is important to me on a very personal level. Forget Meursault, Des Esseintes is a true existentialist hero.
  6. morison/pooley:
Two philosophy lecturers; give the prelims course on "general philosophy". Are clearly in love; kept using one another in their examples, with gems like "If I woke up one morning, went to the mirror, and saw Pooley's face looking back at me" ... "The day-man is not responsible for the night-man's actions, perhaps is not even aware of them" ... and so on.
  7. placebo:
oh, brian molko. back when i was just getting into Bowie, placebo were everywhere being touted as his succesor, musically, stylistically, gender-fuckingly. it was natural that i would investigate; and with "black market music" i was hooked.
  8. rent boys:
orlando bloom plays a rent boy in "wilde". true fact. i'm sure that being a rent boy is horrible and degrading. but there's something about their place in late 1800s / early 1900s society that i can't help but like.
  9. terry pratchett:
is god. writes books that make me laugh out loud. the wyrd sisters bid went through... i will audition for Nanny Ogg...
  10. ziggy stardust:
"people stared at the make-up on his face
laughed at his long black hair, his animal grace
the boy in the bright blue jeans jumped up on the stage
and Lady Stardust sang his songs of darkness and disgrace"

the genderfuck. the "everyone is bisexual". the open marriage. the house filled with the entourage of sexual and romantic intrigues. the sense of infinite possibility and creativity. ziggy (the character, the creation, never bowie, the creator) showed the world - showed me - what was possible.
