Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't parasites have to, by definition, live off another creature, making the host suffer so the parasite can profit... and yet the whole point of fanfiction is that we can't profit, and fanfiction, by spreading the influence of a fandom, almost certainly does a lot of good to the author by getting more people interested, who may buy the source canon. Honestly, you'd think an academic institution would think before creating a course syllabus
You know there's at least one ficcer who didn't get beyond the title and totally signed up for that class (ready to defend his/her slashy 'ship). Also, so many of the people are going to drop it in horror or get converted. How anyone manages to actively dislike fanfic, I have never understood.
