I have a verrrry interesting theory concerning tonks in HBP:

Tonks, in HBP, is being impersonated by a polyjuicing death eater.

this would explain the following:

- she loses the ability to metamorphose
- she won't meet dumbledore's eyes
- she won't go to Order-related social events (eg dinner at Molly's)
- her patronus changes
- she forms a random infatuation with remus which, unlike ron/hermione, harry/ginny or bill/fleur, has absolutely no forshadowing whatsoever.

the assumption is that her infatuation with remus causes all of the above. bearing that in mind, isn't this quotation from the interview JKR gave to Emerson of mugglenet very interesting indeed?

there is no place for romance in a detective story except that it can be useful to camouflage other people’s motives. That's true; it is a very useful trick...I’ve used that to a degree on Tonks in this book, as a red herring.

i also read this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/shaggydogstail/23393.html) rather interesting theory the other day - it seems a lot of people are seeing a lot wrong with tonks in this book.
