1. An eastern Mediterranean evergreen tree (Ceratonia siliqua) in the pea family, having pinnately compound leaves and large, dark, leathery pods.
2. The pod of this plant, containing a sweet edible pulp and seeds that yield a gum used as a stabilizer in food products. Also called algarroba.
3. An edible powder or flour made from the ground seeds and pods of this plant, often used as a substitute for chocolate.
carob powder. a staple product for any health food to stock, it's healthier than chocolate because it's much, much sweeter and one doesn't need to add sugar or milk when using it. a rather vital ingredient of the super vegan carob cake.
not in oxford it isn't!
in oxford, the clueless teenager in holland & barrett doesn't know what it is even when i spell and describe it to her. she suggests i try a deli. i traipse around every. single. deli. in the covered market, breaking my back because i've already bought the rest of the cake ingredients (1kg oats, 1/2kg flour, 1kg raisins, 1l soymilk, 1/2kg dairy-free spread -- 4kg of cooking ingredients, plus the books i've picked up from the philosophy library, an absolute bitch for my super-sensitive back), only to be told the only place i'm likely to find it is some obscure place down the cowley road.
i'm trying to calm down. perhaps i'm being unreasonable?
