i'm in the computer room right now.

is it odd that i'm so afraid of my scout [not-a-maid who empties bins & changes beds] that i vacate my room when i know she's around? but she does hate me. i know my room isn't all that tidy, and i know she's walked in on some displays of non-standard sleeping habits (wrapped in a fur throw and a hot girl on a matress and a pile of cushions on the floor, anyone?), but that doesn't explain why i'm so afraid of her. i think it's the way she looks at me, like she knows that i shouldn't really be here and i'm not doing any work and i'm just freeloading money from the government to doss around and discover myself for 3 years.

also, i am trying to print some stats questions. death! i'm getting my own printer next year, wadham printer is OF DEATH. it never works when you need it to, and when it does work, it's out of paper or ink and the computer manager's got the flu. one printer between 450-odd undergrads is just not enough.

i think i'm going to go to the JCR, buy a coffee and do these questions. my room is too stuffy and full of distractions.

Oh, god, my scout comes round about 8am and I vacate my room, because I get Looked At like that too! I think it's all the empty bottles...

my scout comes around 10, usually, but if i leave the bin outside the door she doesn't come in. she hasn't been in but two or three times since the beginning of last term, in fact.

(changes beds?! dude.)

My scout's lovely, and very pleasant. Indeed, many mornings the bin is outside just in case I want a sleep in, but I don't minf letting her in, and she certainly doesn't look at oddly at all. Then again, one week she was sick, and replaced with a scary pair of girls, so I put the bin every morning for them.

[is shocked] They change your bed for you! We don't get that service! Then again, she does my sink a very thorough scrubbing once a week, so that's good.

Jon thinks I'm scared of his scout, he says I hid in the sink area when she was around! I'm not...much. But I'm so weird about having other people in my room, and I would think my scout was judging me if she found someone else in my room. And I'm SO untidy.

My scout's great. We are, in general, an extremely tidy staircase, so don't get any disparaging glances for being untidy. The kitchen, which we keep spotless, is now endowed with a coffee machine and bar stool that she obtained for us, and she tends to bring us food from Asda when she goes shopping. We also get showers de-mildewed, and things like that.

I've just had a conversation with her, and she's offered to show me the rooms in staircase 28 (where I'm planning to live next year) as well as given me advice on what the best rooms are, etc.

Why do you get such a nice scout? I thought mine was nice, but she's rubbish compared to your one. Maybe I'll show this entry and see if it makes her improve.

you can't have the best of everything in st john's, apparently. :-)

I'm really not convinced St John's is that rich. I'm sure they are, but I don't know to take advantage of this, which is the natural reaction when confronted with any institution I can abuse or steal from. I'm sure I'll figure how to con this college out of its money sooner or later. Maybe I'll ask for a grant to get a better pair of speakers, so that the music will positively... oh just give me the bloody money

Apparently John's did want to supply each student room with a computer... but the university wouldn't allow this because then people would only apply to John's and this would ruin the application process.

At least, this is what a friend of mine says. Guess what college he's at?

My scout seemed really scary at first but she turned out to be a sweetheart. We ended up chatting every time she came around and although it took me a while to understand what she was saying - I studied in Scotland and I'm a non-native speaker - she turned out to be incredibly motherly and protective towards my entire flat.

You're at Wadham? How much of a dork am I for not knowing this before? (They were the ones foolish enough to give me an offer) When I was down for interview I'd forgotten about scouts on the first morning and was extremely surprised/embarrassed to find someone else cleaning my sink and changing my sheets. I also had to resist the urge to say "no, no, I can clean up after myself" to the people serving dinner. Oh dear.

Yeesh. On the top floor of staircase 2 in the quad - 9, I think. Shared with another PPEist (who got in too) and it was very nice, even if the floorboards outside creaked so much I feared that they'd collapse under my weight when I walked across the landing.
