Chasing the dragon

Today I accidentally pretended to be a Tory.

We were in Witney, doing a bit of pro-AV street theatre with a St George's Day theme ('slaying the dragon of First Past the Post' - represented by the three-person pantomime dragon called Errol. deathbyshinies was the wing-section. It was awesome.) This being Witney, David Cameron's home constituency, we had some quite excellent "Conservative Yes" campaign leaflets. They are actually amongst the most informational and sensible leaflets I've seen in this campaign - plenty of myth-debunking, and minimal meaningless use of buzzwords irrelevant to the voting system.

I hadn't intended to present myself as a Tory, merely to present the Tory arguments for AV; but I was so shocked with the reaction that I got from one woman that I ended up going along with it.

She said - "But the Tories are against AV!".

I said - "David Cameron might be, but not all of us agree."

She said - "You should be ashamed of yourself, going against your leader."

I said - "Well AV was good enough to elect him leader of the Conservative Party.."

But she was already walking away.

Excellent - wish I'd been there, but am instead in the north-east. This "going against your leader" business is rich given that the tories are probably best at it, on the whole... I'd rather have STV but AV is a step in the right direction away from the political distorting lens which so badly misrepresents this country.
