david bowie was advertising mineral water in france.

the ad involved him walking around his house, which was packed with his alter egos: ziggy standing in the bathroom using the hairdryer, a diamond dog on the landing, halloween jack climbing the stairs, aladdin sane watching him ominously, the thin white duke and the harlequin from the ashes to ashes video sitting at the kitchen table. then he left the house, shushing the camera. the tagline was 'to drink vittel is to be reborn', and the music was 'never gonna get old' from the reality album.

i also picked up some of oscar wilde's fairy tales in french (le prince heureux et autres contes). on the cover, it claimed to be for 9-yr-olds. and in the back, it had a chronology of wilde's life, mentioning that he 'prefered the company of young men' and that he 'fell in love with lord alfred douglas' and so on... i love that openess. i'm sure you wouldn't get that kind of honesty in british kids books, but maybe i'm wrong.

and now i'm watching 'little shop of horrors' dubbed into french. the songs do sound bizarre, but it's not at all badly done.

see this? this is my french revision, this - rock musical and oscar wilde. it is absolutely not for fun. (ah, who am i fooling?)

i am very, very broke.

Re: Wilde - if you don't think UK books would have been open - imagine the US version. "Wilde's acquaintance, Lord Alfred Douglas...".

I love Bowie's Scary Monsters Pierrot character. I wish I owned Scary Monsters.
