Y hullo thar Harry Potter fandom.

For real. Given JKR's ability to process these concepts WHY DID REMUS LUPIN GET MARRIED AND HAVE BABIES? (I mean obviously, awful aching loneliness and the fact that Tonks can turn into Sirius for sex.. but what about terrible we're-the-only-ones-left-now Snupin angst-sex?) (Cut for rampant bi-phobia. What I meant was, why did she force him into a heteronormative paradigm.. what I said was "sleeping with men is incompatible with sleeping with women", which makes me a big shiny hypocrite. Apologies.)

I mean, it's a given that she wouldn't mention this earlier, ie, when she had BOOKS to sell, isn't it?

Also, my radiator does not work. Not "needs bleeding" - there's hot water in the in-pipe that doesn't even make into the bottom-right corner of the thing. The thermostatic intake valve is set to maximum. What am I doing wrong?

I'm assuming you've tried bleeding it, pressure problems can cause total fail, plus if there is some blockage, the pressure shift might move it.

I really don't get this "I fancy Lupin so he has to be gay" thing. Then again, I had an argument last night with a friend who totally fails to understand why I (and most supporters of Scotland and Wales) support any team playing against England: she lacked the background sense of oppression to make any sense of it. Maybe this is something I similarly lack the background for.

No, we're going to try it tomorrow so that we don't look like total idiots if that was the problem & we call the landlord in about it.. we just don't think it's very likely to work. Could well be back here eating my words, though!

It's not about whether I fancy Lupin or not, though - it's about the portrayal of his relationship with Sirius, and the fact that a lot of people reading the books - even those with no fandom background (eg me when I first read them) come away with the distinct impression that they are/were lovers.

I did have this thought, along with that Dumbledore was a 'safe' (ie asexual) character to out, but...I like the casualness of it. There's lots of info that slips out in interviews that wasn't relevant to the main plot, and the fact that the only wizard Voldemort ever feared was a big queer is just one of many nuggets - it might have greater resonance with fans, but that's how it should be presented, I think.

Why can't Lupin be bi? I don't feel that him getting married changes the fact that he clearly was Sirus's lover at some point in their past.

You are, as ever, much wiser than me.

Score 1 for Emma's hypocrisy!

:-)

I can understand the point, though - I'm sure plenty of people have taken his marriage to mean "har har, told u so, slash sux cos gays are, like, gay n shit!!1!"

But I guess the suggestion that he could be bi is a way of continuing her aim: "[JKR] regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority.""

I think personally it seems just like marketing. I'm not a big potter geek but from what I have seen it makes no difference whatsoever whether he was gay or not. When I heard about it I just thought "Hmmm... several months since potter was last seriously in the news, this should get people talking about it again."

I'm cynical and think it was good publicity stuff.

I'm not sure though about your suggestion that she didn't want to mention it earlier because it would impact book sales (if I am reading you correctly). I just can't think that it would have been necessary to bring it up before apart from as fan-service to the slash ficcers.

And while I'm at it:

She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."

"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.

so when asked if dumbledore found true love her response was that he is gay. Is that actually relevant even? Is she saying "Of course he didn't find true love, he's gay!" or "Of course he found true love, he's gay!"? the quoting may be a little shonky but I think this is more than anything what has made me very cynical and like she was looking for an excuse to out dumbledore and if so why?

I guess it might have flowed more naturally from the Grindelwald explanation thatn that makes out but I'm still cynical. :)
