2:1

in a sense it was what I was working for - not to get a 2:2 - and in another sense it was just. bloody. inevitable. either way i am not surprised or shocked, happy or sad; i have a job and a house for next year. i'd have them anyway. do i wish i felt something? this doesn't mean much. not like a-levels, where one mark off perfect meant durham instead of oxford, and two marks off perfect meant going through clearing. this result doesn't affect my life at all.

Take a bow, library goddess. You did well. We both did.
Are you coming home for intrusion?

Well done my love.

I think I'm with you on the indifference, though. Not because I'm disappointed, exactly, I think it's a good grade. I think my response is more sort of "Two numbers and a little bit of puntuation? That's just such a short and vague way to sum up the whole of what's happened to me here and what I've done." It just doesn't feel like it really *means* anything, I'm finding.

Nonetheless, tis a good mark that will take us good places, and that is the important thing. :-)

Wait for your breakdown, eh? That might mean a little more.

But yes, I feel like the (Oxon) says a lot more about what I've been doing these last three years than the 2:1 does.

i thought the 2.1 meant you were clever enough to still get a good result but not so sad that you never went out and had fun (IE got a 1st); but nothing can really explain the experience in any meaningful way...

and also: WELL DONE!

Gosh! They rejected not only me, but ALL my clever friends; Edward only got in third time round. I am very impressed.

Durham made me an offer I could possibly acheive - they wanted an A in one more subject that I was actually taking. *grin*

Well done!

And 2:1 (Oxon) sets you up fine for doing further study if you ever decide to, which could be useful.

Gods - maybe they assumed you were Oxbridge candidates & didn't bother? My most intelligent friend from school is at Durham.. that seems very bizarre!

Precisely!

(Although I'll say now that I probably recommend against UCL unless you're really interested in cataloguing/classification or old books- for more up-to-date aspects of librarianship you'll find much better courses elsewhere.)

I think what happened is that they assumed I was going to retake my AS level to get it up to an A. They offered me 3 As at A level and an A at AS level. I'd already finished and finalised the only AS I was taking, with a B grade. (I only managed AAB at A level, I scraped in to Oxford on the strength of my distinction on the english extension papers. I haven't not been dissapointed with an exam result since clearing the board with my GCSEs *grin*)

Durham sent me an offer a week after I had to have made by final choices (Manchester and Oxford).

Um...for us silly Canadians on your flist, what on EARTH is a 2:1? Or a 2:2 for that matter?

OK, when you get a degree they come in different "classes" - first, second (in two divisions, 2.i & 2.ii), third, pass, or fail.

In the UK a first or 2:1 tend to be considered "good" degrees; for example, something like 80% of the graduate recruiters in the Oxbridge Careers Handbook were looking for "2.1 or above" from their applicants.

Thank you! And did it only take two years to get your degree, or am I mistaken?

From: [identity profile] sebastienne.livejournal.com
three years. how many are you signed up for?

Date: 2007-07-05 01:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] janetmweiss.livejournal.com
Three and a half. But the universal for North America seems to be four. (Quebec, where I live, is an exception because we like to do everything the crazy, nonsensical way.)

From: [identity profile] sebastienne.livejournal.com
a lot of my scientist friends are signed up for four years, but they get a better degree for that; they can drop out with the same degree as me after three.

Library science. Living with [livejournal.com profile] sugar_and_space, [livejournal.com profile] deathbyshinies, and [livejournal.com profile] gin_gerkitten & working in an student library.

But do try to stop me if I go all "Rupert Giles" and start "training" first years in the basement, hmm?

From: [identity profile] janetmweiss.livejournal.com
I'm in engineering, so maybe that's what it is. But if I dropped out after 3 years, I wouldn't have a degree at all. And technically I'm doing 4.5 years of university because Quebec has one more year of high school than practically everywhere else in the world (sort of). The last year of high school is supposed to correspond to the first year of university for everyone else. It's...very confusing.

Anyway! Congratulations on graduating. And a 2:1 sounds pretty good to this Canadian girl!

Well done! A 2.1 is not to be sniffed at. You worked damn hard for it, don't devalue it in your own mind. People will look at it and apprecaite that.

Congratulations, and congratulations, and congratulations again, both for everything that's demonstrated and celebrated by that blessed piece of paper, and for everything you've achieved here that isn't.

And if you don't adopt some sweet and geeky first-years and start teaching them how to slay monsters and speak Latin while secretly conducting a career as a wistful coffee-house folk-sing, I will be sadly disappointed.
