sebastienne: My default icon: I'm a fat white person with short dark hair, looking over my glasses. (bite me)

Ok, [livejournal.com profile] sebastienne, so maybe your parents were right when they told you that the Dangerous Gothic Subculture would be the ruin of you1... or at least your eyesight.

This morning I found myself sitting on a black sofa, wearing black trousers, sewing black netting into a black skirt with black thread.

Damn you and your Gothic agenda! I won't be seduced into your deviant lifestyle which seeks to destroy my vision! I am stronger than that!

1 My parents have, in fact, never said anything like this. But it's effective rhetoric, neh?

Hee hee and you told me you couldn't sew! I'll have you costuming yet, honey... :-)

That icon looks a bit like leprosy. Sorry, I'll go away now.

Oh, I really really cannot sew. When you see this dress you'll take back any request for my costuming help. It's being made from necessity and lack of money rather than faith that I can do a decent job.

Although, I'll admit, I'm doing better than I thought I would, and my creative vision is driving me to work hard in a way that other things have never done...

However, this is a very personal project. I don't know whether the passion would cross over.

That's what I told my dad at Christmas!

"What happened to your neck, Emma?"

"Leprosy."

"No really - what happened?"

"Really. Leprosy."

*swiftly changes subject*

...am i going mad, or does your icon contain a winged toaster?

Yes indeedy it does. The kitchen appliances underwent a makeover for my classics-themed birthday party; the kettle still has paper urn-handles and the fridge is an ionic column. I'm glad you noticed, as my friend Tish said it looks like I'm drinking out of a potty.

What's it for? Can I see a picture?

(Can you guess I'd rather be sewing than trying to comprehend Learning Theory? I hate conditioning.)

I'm afraid I left my digital camera in Oxford, so the best I can do is show you the diabolocailly bad paint mock-up I showed Ashley, for whom I'm making the dress.

so far, all i've done is take this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9302387701&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1) skirt and sewn two layers of bunched-up netting underneath, with 6 dangling ribbons I'm going to put the bows onto this evening.

That was what I thought when I first saw the icon... until I looked more closely.

Did you hear about the recent 'so what? we were bored' type research that showed Goths were statisticaly more middle class and got better exam results than average.

Yay for the BBC - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4828230.stm

It's when you find you've sewn the skirt to your trousers and then your trousers to the sofa cos it was all black and you got confused that you have to start worrying...(or is that just me? *whistles innocently*) That, or just resign yourself to a sofa lifestyle ;)

That, or just resign yourself to a sofa lifestyle

Being a sofa is a matter of personal choice, and should probably be based on whether or not you're soft, squishy and covered in cushions.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] flt says she would just be inclined to turn the lights on brighter. "Install 100-watt bulbs. Delay the inevitable."

:-D

Hee hee - that is marvellous.

And true in some ways. Not sure "middle class values" is accurate because that entirely depends on which values you label as middle class, but I think all the goths I've known have been very intelligent. I guess it's just a different form of social criticism, and definitely takes some creativity and self-confidence to dress full-on-goth on a teenager's/student's budget!

I just like the pretty clothes! But then, I was always a bit of an accidental goth.
