Show last night was INCREDIBLE. Had a gorgeous grass-roots-y feel to it and the audience laughed at the Buffy and Harry Potter references.. people seemed to get what we were trying to do. So much so that I even had someone asking to join!

One song that I'm not sure went across as well as it needed to was the one about fat acceptance. I think this despite the fact that the song itself is FA 101: I'm not sure that the audience were even ready for that. And I think I know why.

I've been meaning for ages to test my hypothesis that Red Dwarf got worse after losing Rob Grant because, essentially, he was The Talent. So I picked up his book, 'Fat', from [livejournal.com profile] necaris' big book clearout; and found something so cutting, so incisive, so true, that I want to write him letters and tell him that I know - knew all along, ever since reading 'Backwards' - that he is the soul of the show.

I love this so much that I had to type it out for you:

Prologue to 'Fat' by Rob Grant )

The think that cuts me about this the most is the way that he has woven things that are already happening in with the things that we find ridiculous. People being told to lose weight to treat unrelated health problems; comedians in fat suits; these are things we see around us all the time. And they are horrible hideous things that had faded into the background of my life and I love Rob Grant with all my soul.
