Sep. 7th, 2008 12:43 pmDerek Jarman's Sebastiane is a film which has hovered on the edge of my cultural awareness for a very long time. Inevitably, given that I saw Velvet Goldmine at such a formative age and consequently spent years loving Wilde and Bowie to the exclusion of all else. It's the story of St Sebastian (a saint historically favoured by homosexuals; Wilde's favourite painting, according to one biographer; yes, whence my LJ name, what's your point?); the first positive representation of m/m sexuality in a mainstream film; featuring Lindsay Kemp (Bowie's dance teacher; inspiration for Maxwell Demon); music by Brian Eno (who comes up an awful lot if you're reading about Bowie, and whose music is featured in Velvet Goldmine). It's also the first (only?) film ever to be entirely in Latin.
Being, essentially, obscure 70s gay soft-porn in Latin, it wasn't that easy to get hold of as a 13-year-old girl.
But oh, what boons adulthood and the internet bring. For now I have seen it! And my most lasting impression, from a film that I first wanted to see ten years ago?
"Hah! The subtitle says "mother-fucker" when he actually said "Oedipus"! What wit!"
In less self-indulgent news, Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss are teaming up to write a Sherlock Holmes show for the BBC! The internet says so; it must be true. Be still my fangirlish heart!
