Dec. 10th, 2006 10:26 pmI'm trying to locate an audiobook I had as a kid. Well, not exactly locate - more, just remember what it was.
There was a village that had been entirely deserted by people. They had taken their dogs with them, but left their cats behind. The cats had formed a society, conforming to their previous owners' roles in it. The church cats had been reproducing so copiously that they'd run out of old testament names - their newest litter were called matthew, mark, luke, and john. There was a renegade cat who lived out in the wild; he had a wormtongue-like cat who helped him. The cats who lived up at the big house thought themselves above everyone else - they had a garden with peacocks in it, and a pond full of coi. Our Hero was thoroughly chastised for catching the coi; but the people up at the big house were too posh to hunt, and so had been starving to death, and in the end thanked him and ate it. If I remember rightly, the head of that household called himself the colonel. They also had a balcony with a sundial on it on which the final dramatic fight scene between Our Hero and the renegade cat took place, in a thunderstorm.
The audiobook cover had a purple border.
I have tried ebay, amazon, wikipedia's list of famous cats, random google searches... help?
