it was creepy, darkly sexual, filled with chocolate and forbidden things.

but now

Tim Burton

is making

"You'll never escape that memory that's seared into your consciousness of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka," he admits. "It was really amazing to watch as a kid growing up, and I've watched it with my kids. So it's just, Okay, where do I go from there? Gene Wilder did something very beautiful and it's time to take it somewhere else."

Depp doubts that Burton will make him belt out musical numbers like Wilder did in the original, but he's not exactly opposed to the idea, either.

Depp would make an awesome Wonka...better than Marilyn Manson, who I like but just can't see in the role. [although the purple velvet Victorian menswear would certainly work for him]

IMO, purple victorian menswear would work rather spiffingly with Johnny Depp too . . . but then, i'm thinking of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers with that lilac velvet frock-coat in velvet goldmine . . . a very beautiful thing to behold.
